Average order value is the quiet multiplier. Same traffic, same conversion rate, 15% more per order — and none of it costs acquisition spend. It is also the metric most often "improved" in ways that reduce profit: a 20% volume discount that lifts AOV 10% is a loss. So every tactic below comes with the maths. Track items per order and contribution margin per order alongside AOV, or you will fool yourself.
1. Free shipping threshold, set just above the current AOV
The most reliable lever. Set the threshold at 15–25% above your current AOV (AOV £38 → free shipping over £45). Show a progress bar in the cart: "Add £7.20 for free delivery". Typical result: 10–20% AOV lift, with a small conversion gain because shipping cost was already a friction. Maths: the extra items must carry more margin than the shipping you now absorb; at 40%+ gross margin they almost always do.
2. Bundles at a fixed price
"Starter kit", "family pack", "the complete set". Use Shopify Bundles (native, free) so inventory deducts per component. Price the bundle 8–12% below the sum of parts — enough to be obviously good value, not enough to erode margin. Bundles also reduce decision fatigue, which lifts conversion on their own.
3. Volume discounts (carefully)
"Buy 2 save 5%, buy 3 save 10%" on consumables. Works because it targets people already buying. The trap: giving 10% to customers who would have bought 3 anyway. Check your items-per-order distribution first; if 30% already buy 3+, set the tiers higher. Shopify's native discount functions handle this without an app.
4. Cross-sells on the product page
"Frequently bought together" beneath the add-to-cart, limited to 2–3 items that are genuinely complementary (refill with dispenser, batteries with device, wipes with nappies). Data-driven pairing (from order history) beats manual after a few hundred orders. 5–15% of orders take one; low effort.
5. Cart drawer upsell
One item in the cart drawer, ideally low-price, high-margin, no decision required: a travel size, a spare, a gift bag. Do not put a carousel here; it delays checkout. Acceptance rates of 8–20% are normal.
6. Post-purchase one-click upsell
After payment, before the thank-you page: a single offer charged to the same card with one tap. Zero risk to the original conversion because it comes after it. Acceptance 5–15%; pure incremental. Best offers are "add another at 20% off" or a related consumable. Our checkout guide covers placement.
7. Subscribe & save
For anything replenished — consumables, supplements, pet food, coffee, nappies. A 10–15% subscription discount with Shopify Subscriptions (free) lifts customer lifetime value far more than AOV, but it also nudges the first order to a larger size. Show the per-delivery saving, not the percentage.
8. Price anchoring and a premium tier
Add a larger or premium version above your hero product. Even if few buy it, the mid option now looks reasonable and sells more. A 3-pack next to a 6-pack next to a 12-pack shifts the median purchase up one step in most tests.
9. Gift wrap, cards and add-ons
Small fixed-price add-ons (£2.95 gift wrap, £1.50 card, £4 engraving) at high margin. Trivial individually; across thousands of orders, meaningful. Seasonal switch-on in Q4.
10. Minimum order for a discount code
Every promotional code should carry a minimum spend at or above current AOV. "10% off orders over £50" instead of "10% off". Same acquisition effect, higher AOV, protected margin.
11. Tiered gift with purchase
"Spend £60, get X free; spend £100, get Y". Gifts cost you COGS, not margin percentage, so they are cheaper than discounts at the same perceived value. Works especially well in beauty and gifting categories.
12. Quantity selector defaults and pack sizes
For products bought in multiples (trade, consumables), default the quantity selector to the common pack, offer "case of 6" as a variant, and show unit price. On B2B stores this alone can double AOV — see the B2B guide.
13. Buy now, pay later visibility
Klarna and Clearpay messaging on product pages lifts AOV 10–30% in fashion, home and electronics because the monthly figure makes a larger basket feel smaller. Fees are 3–6% — model against the lift.
14. Cart-value-aware email
Abandoned checkout emails that say "you're £8 away from free delivery" or suggest the matching item outperform generic reminders. Klaviyo can read cart value; use it. Our Klaviyo flows guide shows the setup.
The maths you must run
| Tactic | Cost to you | Break-even test |
|---|---|---|
| Free shipping threshold | Shipping on qualifying orders | Margin on added items > average shipping cost |
| Volume / bundle discount | % of revenue | Incremental units × margin > discount on units they'd buy anyway |
| Gift with purchase | COGS of gift | Lift in orders qualifying × margin > gift cost × all qualifiers |
| BNPL | 3–6% fee | AOV lift × margin > fee on all BNPL orders |
| Post-purchase upsell | App fee | Almost always positive |
Where to start
Free shipping threshold with a progress bar, a post-purchase upsell, and minimum spend on every discount code. Those three are low effort, near-zero risk and typically lift AOV 15–25% combined within a month. Then bundles and cross-sells. Track AOV, items per order and contribution margin per order weekly — the KPIs guide explains why all three are needed.
AOV is easy to raise and easy to fake. The question is never "did AOV go up" — it is "did margin per order go up".
Frequently asked questions
What is a good average order value for a Shopify store?
It depends entirely on category — £25–£45 for consumables and beauty, £60–£120 for fashion and home, £200+ for furniture and B2B. Benchmark against your own history and track margin per order alongside it.
Where should I set my free shipping threshold?
15–25% above your current AOV, with a cart progress bar showing how much more is needed. Set it higher if your margin on typical add-on items is low, and check that absorbed shipping costs less than the margin on the extra items.
Do bundles increase average order value?
Yes, typically 10–20% on orders where a bundle is chosen, and they reduce decision fatigue. Price bundles 8–12% below the sum of parts and use Shopify's native Bundles so inventory tracks correctly.
What is a post-purchase upsell?
A one-click offer shown after payment but before the order confirmation, charged to the same card. It cannot hurt the original conversion and typically 5–15% of customers accept, making it pure incremental revenue.
